Credit Cards and the College Student

Summary: Credit cards can either be a great tool or a horrid curse. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind when considering whether or not to get a credit card.

It is around the time that most people are in college that many make another decision that has lifelong ramifications—the decision to get a credit card. You may ask yourself "why it is that getting a credit card is one of those decisions that affect my entire life?" This is simple, due to the fact that this is your credit rating being discussed here. Your credit rating can, and will, affect such things as where you are going to live and whether or not you can get that wonderful job that you have been dreaming about. So, it should be of little surprise that there are several things you are going to have to keep in mind as you are deciding whether you should get a credit card or not.

The first thing that you should keep in mind is that paying off credit card debt is not an easy thing for most people. In fact, you need to keep in mind that there is an entire industry set up solely to "help" people deal with the debt that is brought about through the use of credit cards. Chances are you have heard their commercials on the radio or television. On average, a mistake that you make with your credit is going to stay on the records for at least seven years. That means that if you failed to pay off a credit card and it got canceled, when you were 18, it would stay on your credit report until you are 25. So, here are some tips to keep in mind to help you keep your credit in good condition.

  • If it sounds too good to be true, then it is. Nothing is ever free, and no you cannot actually quit anytime that you want. There is always a cost for anything that you get through one of these companies. When you look at the fine print, you may find out that you are actually unable to cancel a credit card for a period of time, or at least until you have paid off all that you have charged on it.
  • Ask yourself questions such as: is a credit card really needed; what are you going to use the credit card for; or can you even afford a credit card at all? Anything that you charge on a credit card has to be paid back, and with interest.
  • Not all credit cards are the same. They all offer different annual percentage rates, different terms, and various conditions. These conditions are things such as the ability to change your terms when the company wants to, a default interest rate, and so on.

These are just some of the things that you need to keep in mind when you are thinking of getting a credit card. The list of things to look for go on and on, and like was mentioned earlier there is enough information about this topic for a complete industry in and of itself. Be sure you know exactly what you are getting into.
