Getting your own place always seems to be a must for any new or returning college student. This can be an extremely confusing process for anyone doing this for their first time. What to look for? How do you know when you have found the best place for your needs? Should you buy or lease? Is it any wonder that this is something that can quickly overwhelm anyone? There are some simple things that anyone can do to improve their odds for finding the best possible housing.
- Check around. When you are looking for your new palace look everywhere that you can think of to find the best possible deals. Check with real estate agents, off campus housing, friends, and even searching the web. Don't just go with the first one that you find, doing this enables you to find the best possible deal.
- Talk to potential neighbors. When you find a place that you might want to move into, you really should check with your potential neighbors. This way you are going to know what your new neighbors are going to be like, what the area is like, and even what your landlord might be like.
- Write it down. Prior to signing any lease you want to make sure that you know what you are signing. If your landlord is saying that they are going to do something, make sure that you have it in writing. Since a lease is a legally binding contact, you need to make sure that all your I's are dotted and your T's crossed.
- Ask questions. When looking at making any changes to the apartment or house, be sure that you know what you can and cannot do to your place. Check with your landlord prior to doing making the changes, if you don't you run the risk of losing your deposit, and maybe even running up a higher cost in the long run.
- Find good roommates. As a college student, first out on your own, going to school, and possibly working, you may not have enough money to pay for your entire rent on your own. You might want to consider taking in a roommate to help alleviate the cost. Keep in mind, though, that there may be difficulties with your new living companion. Find someone that you can get along with, and ensure that you write down and agree on any ground rules.
