Finding Your Perfect College Job

Summary: Jobs have more importance than just giving you more spending money. Here are some job ideas that give you more than just a paycheck.

Now that you are in college, you are probably going to want a job. The reason for wanting a job can be varied, though typically people want to get a job because they are wanting or needing a little more cash in their pockets. Chances are, since you are now in college you already know how to fill out an application, so we are going to skip over that part of the process.

The first thing that you need to do is determine what type of job you are going to want. There are many places that you can look for your future job. You could look online, or in the help wanted advertisements of the local paper. There are other jobs though that you can find, if only you know where to look. Well here are a few jobs that you may not have thought of, or maybe didn't even know that you could do as a college student.

  • Teaching Assistant. One possibility for a college job would be to work alongside one of your professors. You can get a lot of experience working alongside your professor. For many people, this can be the perfect job, since you typically get to keep office hours and get some professional academic advice for specific courses that you might be taking. In addition you may be able to have other doors opened for you, may be get help if you are going to be trying for graduate school. It is always helpful to have a mentor, not to mention that this type of job looks absolutely fabulous on a resume.
  • Resident Assistant. Chances are you not going to be able to get a job doing this as a freshman, as most colleges require that you have at the minimum a year or two as a student under the belt prior to getting this job. There are some excellent benefits that come with having this job. One example of the benefit that you can receive is that of free housing. As an RA, you can get some really nice housing, for example a whole dorm room without having to have a roommate. In return you are going to be required to hold monthly meetings with the dorm residents under your care, and enforce the college's rules of conduct. Chances are, you are also going to be asked for advice by the students under your care.
  • Lab Technician. Depending on your field of study, becoming a lab technician can offer you great experience. While getting paid, you can also get real world experience in your field of study, while also seeing getting a chance to have real world application of your study as well. Many times, this type of job can also help the undecided student determine whether or not they actually want to continue in their proposed major.
  • Intern. As stated in another article, being an intern can be a valuable tool on the career path. Depending on where you are awarded an internship at, you may or may not be paid. This type of position can, and often does, lead to a full paying job. At the very least, such positions as these offer valuable experience that gives you a leg up on any of your peers.
  • Librarian Assistant. One place on campus that is almost always in dire need of workers is the library. At your local library you could work in such places as the audio/visual departments, material check out, copy machines, and computer systems to name just a few. There is virtually no limit on what field you can get experience in by working with your library, and (this can be a major plus) while working there, you are going to have access to more areas and more people to help out for your term papers and research projects. By itself, this one benefit can be of untold help to any student.
