Getting into Fashion Design School

If someone wants to become a great musician, then they decide to go to a music school. Just like if someone wants to be a great attorney, they need to go to a law school. In today's world it is a forgone conclusion that to succeed in your chosen field you are going to need to study at the very least several years. The best place to do this, of course, would be in a school. So the best place to go to learn how to do fashion design would be at a fashion design school. Here are some ways that you can get into the fashion design school that you want.

• Draw. Part of being a fashion designer means that you know how to draw. You are going to be asked what your designs look like prior to making them, and in order to best show your designs you need to be able to draw them. Often times just drawing out an idea is enough to know whether something is going to work or not. Many times a school is going to ask you to provide an example of your designs, and it is a lot easier to provide copies of your drawing portfolio than it is to mail in a totally completed ensemble. So, if you know how to draw, practice. If you don't know how to draw, learn and practice. Either way, practice is key.
• Grades. It should come as no surprise to anyone that since you are going to be going to a school grades are important. Grades show that you are hard working and willing to finish what you start, as well as being able to learn and absorb new ideas. Grades reflect this, so get cracking on those books.
• Mentors. Get into contact with local designers, even if they do not have a big name anywhere. Ask if they are willing to let you follow them around, interview them, or even teach you a few things. These people have experience in the industry, and you are going to be able to learn more from them, tricks of the trade as it were, that you are going to be able to use throughout the rest of your life.
• Work. Get a part time job at a local fashion boutique or trendy stores. This allows you learn what people like, and by being able to include this on your school application that you have some experience in the industry, while willing to work in the industry at whatever the level.
• Sew. Learning to sew should be a necessity for anyone that wants to go to fashion design school. Knowing how to sew helps you to know exactly how each article of clothing interacts with another, not to mention that as a designer you are going to need to make your own clothes, and often a school is going to ask for some samples of your work.
